A Backstory

A baby boy had been left on the door step of Shepherd Boys Home. There was a note that simply stated that the baby was a boy, and he was three months old, but that was it. No name. No actual date of birth. No reason to why he was abandoned. It was lucky he hadn’t caught a cold or any other illness before he had been discovered. The orphanage had named him Garrett, and for legal purposes, given him the last name of Shepherd. Although if he was asked, he would say he didn’t have one.Despite being a good kid, Garrett was never one of the kids up for adoption. It never really came up, but that fact managed to not affect his self esteem until much later in life. As a boy, he was very active. He often would help out at the nearby horse farm, when he wasn’t learning boxing from a regular volunteer, Lionel Knight.Although, tragic did strike in the summer after Garrett had turned eight. He was putting up the horses for the night, when suddenly somewhere nearby someone was setting off illegal fireworks. The horse he was putting up got scared, bucked and knocked over a lantern and Garrett. The glass of the lantern broke and there was soon a fire. . . and then the other horses were stampeding right over where the boy still laid. He had been hit with several hooves, but the one that hurt the most was the one that hit him in the back of his head. That injury would prove to be life changing. The last images that Garrett were saw were horses galloping away and a raging fire.Obviously, his sudden blindness didn’t make anything easier. He found himself being isolated just because he couldn’t do the same things as the other boys, and a lot of his time was now spent learning Braille and in trauma therapy. But not all of his old hobbies had died. Lionel hadn’t given up on teaching Garrett how to box.As if he wasn’t already, but Lionel Knight was an inspiration to the boy. The man volunteered at the Home often, taught boxing to the boys that wanted to learn and was a firefighter. But not just any firefighter, the same one that saved Garrett from the fire that robbed him of his sight. It was always the highlight of his day when the man came by, but eventually those visits stopped. Firefighting was a dangerous job, and sometimes it took lives.Even after his passing, Garrett wanted to live up to Lionel’s legacy. But due to his disability, he couldn’t become a fire fighter. There weren’t many things he could do that involved saving people, at least not in the physical sense. He was excellent in school, since he read everything he could find in braille or just listen to whatever documentary he could. So it didn’t take him long to realize that he could save people by becoming a lawyer. An actual good lawyer, one that doesn’t charge people who can’t afford it or defending obviously bad people.Ayden Silver became the first person of his same age that Garrett got close to during high school. The school didn’t have the necessary equipment for a blind student, and Shepherd Boys Home couldn’t afford to send him to a special needs school. So, the high school had randomly picked a student to aid him, and that’s how their friendship had began. The two ended up being so close that they went to the same college together, even both going into law.It was in his final year of Pre-Law that Garrett met the woman that would become his wife one day; Kayley Knight. They had been assigned as partners on a project together, and despite things getting off to a bumpy start, the rest was history. Of course there had been other bumps in their relationship, but just two years after he passed the bar and was officially a lawyer, the two got married.Just a year after getting married, and after a case had lead to Garrett being physically attacked, Kayley had convinced him it was time to trade their big city life for a small town one. Leading the Knights to move to Storybook, Maine.
